ABSTRACT
Rare earth elements refers to a group of 17 heavy metals, which are essential for almost all kinds of high-tech applications. The selective separation of these metals is highly desired. Nevertheless, their purification is highly challenging owing to their high similarity in physical and chemical properties. In this talk, I will review the progress of rare earth separation and talk about our recent work using peptides of Lanthanide-Binding Tags.
BRIEF ACADEMIC/EMPLOYMENT HISTORY:
Dr. Baofu Qiao is an Assistant Professor at Baruch College, CUNY. Prior to Baruch College, Dr. Qiao was a Research Associate Professor at Northwestern University, and an Assistant Chemist at Argonne National Laboratory. He has published around 60 peer-reviewed publications in Nature, Science, PNAS, ACS Nano, and other high-impact journals. His work is funded by two NSF awards and one NIH R01 award.
MOST RECENT RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Dr. Qiao’s research interests focus on polymer-based nanomaterials, protein-based biophysics and biomaterials, and heavy metal ions and separation. Specifically, we are interested in basic science-driven applications: how the fundamental understanding of molecular interactions benefits the design of functional materials, as well as energy applications.
